Gcse English Poetry: Auden compared with Calrke Essay example -- Engli

Gcse English Poetry Auden compared with Calrke GCSE ENGLISH POETRYThe two poems that I will be analysing are Stop all the Clocks byW.H. Auden and The Vet by Gillian Clarke. My discussion will bebased on the theme of the poems and look at how the poets used formand language to help his readers study and make meaning out ofthe poem.STOP ALL THE CLOCKSTHEMEThe theme of this poem is about sorrow. The poet takes his readersthrough a simple but obscure journey that explains the differentstages of grief that a person feels when a loved bingle dies. The poemreveals the emotional upheaval that death can cause. The grief entangleis carefully illustrated by the poet in the form and language he usesthroughout the poem which has a strict rhyming scheme of AABBthroughout the 4 stanzas. make water AND LANGUAGEThe form and language that was used by the poet to describe thefeeling and mood of the bereaved was spread throughout. The first stanza simply showed the first stage of grief and that theb ereaved is coming to terms with the death of a loved one. Forexample, he said stop all the clocks which signified that he wantedto snap on what had just happened and does not want to forget hislove as people do over a period of time. Again he said, ablation off thetelephone meaning he wanted to be alone without communicating toanyone. This is because she wanted to concentrate and grieve on thedeath of his loved one without people offering their condolences. Then the subsist line of the stanza, he said, bring out the coffinwhich suggests that he wanted to start making funeral plans. In the import stanza he wanted to let everyone know that his loved onehas died and he mentioned in the fir... ...tcher by saying no inter-uterine butchery because he uses scalpeljust as the butcher uses sharp blades to cut open animals whenperforming on them. The poet compares the Vet to a butcher in theverse because just as the butcher, the Vet uses a scalpel to cut openthe cow and bring out the cal f and the child basically cannotdifferentiate between a Vet and a ButcherThe last verse is all about the birth of the calf. At this stage theVet finally brings out the calf from its mothers womb. The poetdescribes the cow as a brimming mother in the last line of thestanza comparing the female cow to a human mother. This is becausewhen the calf is born the mother cow shows the calf a lot of love andemotion just as the human mother when they give birth to a child. This makes this particular birth more to a human birth and the calfappear more to a child.
